Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We like questions at St. Andrew’s UMC. So whether you’re thinking about joining the church or you’re wondering about miscellaneous stuff, we have answers. We’ve listed some of the most frequently asked questions here to save you some time. But feel free to contact us too.

Q. How do I become a member of St. Andrew's?
A. There are lots of ways to join our church. You can transfer from another United Methodist Church, join us from a different denomination, or start from scratch making St. Andrew’s your first church home. All are welcome here. Learn more at our next Pizza with the Pastors (PWP). Sign up for the PWP by contacting Mandy at 431.8560 ext. 23, or at mbarkhaus@standrewsomaha.net.

Q. What is Pizza with the Pastors?
A. This is a fun, informal time to learn more about:
  • St. Andrew’s and the United Methodist Church.
  • What it means to be a member of St. Andrew’s.
  • Opportunities for service and growth.

It will also be a time to meet and get to know St. Andrew’s staff members. Of course you’ll be eating pizza too. And at the end of the evening, you will be invited to join St. Andrew’s. New members join church during a Worship Service, so we’ll ask you to choose a service time that is convenient for both you and the church.

When’s the next PWP? We traditionally offer Pizza with the Pastors after the 10:00 service from 11:00-1:00. You can sign up for the next PWP by contacting Mandy at 431.8560 ext. 23, or at mbarkhaus@standrewsomaha.net.

Other Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Are there church members involved in the church leadership?

A. There sure are. Many member and friends are involved in all kinds of committees. The chairpeople of those committees help make up the church’s Administrative Council.

Q. What do I need to do to have my child baptized?
A. You can find all kinds of information about baptism in the Resource Center, but if you have more questions, just call the church office Administrative Assistant, at 431.8560, ext. 10.

Q. What’s your Worship Services style?
A. All three of our services are very similar, and they are a “blended” - combining traditional and contemporary. For example, you’ll hear new Christian music as well as traditional hymns - and sometimes we update old hymns with a fun new beat.

Q. When do you have Church School for the children?
A. Sat at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. Learn more at our Children’s Ministry page.

Q. Do we have children’s choir?
A.  See all your musical options at our Children’s Ministry page.

Q. Besides Church School and Choir, what other activities do you have for kids?
A. The Children’s Ministry page has more details, but just to give you an idea, kids can participate in:

  • Vacation Bible School - both morning and evening sessions the third week in June with a finale during our Worship Services
  • Summer Camps
  • All-Church Family Picnic
  • Upward Basketball from January - March for Kindergarten to 5th grade.

Q. Does a child or youth have to be a member of the church to participate in church activities? A. No. Everyone is welcome at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church. In fact, we encourage our kids to bring friends with them.

Q. Where are the Church School classrooms?
A. In the Lower Level, below the Sanctuary and also in the education wing that is past the gym/offices.

Q. Where do the older kids (6-12 Grade) go for Church School?
A. All youth go to the Family Life Center for Sunday School 10 to 11 a.m. except for the second Sunday of the month when kids worship in the sanctuary with friends or family.

Q. What activities do you have for youth - grades 6 through 12?
A. We have a Director of Youth who keeps the youth busy. Check out our Youth Ministries page to learn more.

Q. What can I expect when I come to worship?
A. Our motto is: Live. Laugh. Love God. You’ll see and experience that at our Worship Services. You’re welcome to come as you are to our Saturday evening service, but our Sunday services are relaxed too, and most people dress in what is often called “business casual."” And there’s always lots of music in each of our Worship Services.

Q. Do I have to be a member to participate in Holy Communion?
A. Everyone is welcome at the Lord's table in the United Methodist Church.

Q. Are there donuts available on Sunday morning?
A. You bet! We encourage time for fellowship between the services.

Q. Does St. Andrew’s get involved in missions and community outreach?
A. Our mission is “to share the gospel of Jesus Christ,” so yes, we encourage risk-taking mission and service. We are engaged in a number of local, regional and international missions projects. Learn more about this at our Outreach page.

Q. Do I have to be a member of the United Methodist church to attend Worship Services or participate in church activities?

A. Heavens no! Many of our people come from different church backgrounds or have no prior experience with church at all. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you’re welcome at St. Andrew’s.

Q. What do United Methodists believe?
A. Methodists don’t vary much from many other churches in our core beliefs. At. St. Andrew’s we talk a lot about the six signs of vital discipleship:

     1) Radical Hospitality
     2) Passionate, Heart-Warming Worship
     3) Risk-Taking Mission and Service
     4) Intentional Faith Formation
     5) Gracious Generosity
     6) Connectional Joy
