St. Andrews Omaha Pastoral Care

To be faithful to our Lord's command in caring for one another. Through Pastoral Care Ministries, we offer assistance designed to meet the needs of the congregation in all circumstances and stages of life-spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

We realize that when we are in ministry to others, we grow ourselves and also provide opportunities for others to grow.

Our pastors provide care for you; first of all, by providing worship that is meaningful and relevant. But their care goes far beyond that. They are available to pray, counsel, and help you discover God's will for your life in times of growth and challenge.

We visit people in hospitals, nursing homes, and homebound. We pray for one another in times of sorrow, illness, and concerns of all kinds. Volunteers transport people who need temporary assistance to and from health related appointments and therapy.

GRIEF SHARE, a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are grieving the death of a loved one.

This 13 week experience will begin on October 29, at 7 p.m.  Cost is $15 – scholarships are available.  Child care is provided upon request.  Register by contacting Pastor Charlotte at 431-8560, ext. 18 or email at cmallott@standrewsomaha.net.

This can be your journey from mourning to joy.

Communion

Jesus said, "do this as often as you will in remembrance of me."

Communion services are held the first Sunday of each month during the regular worship services (except if it is offered at a special service i.e., Christmas Eve). The Sacrament is also taken to the homebound once a month.

Hospital Visitation

"Carry each other's burdens."  Galatians 6:2

From the birth of a baby to a critical illness-and everything in between-a visit from someone who cares for you, whether it be a pastor of a BeFriender Minister, can bring great comfort when you are in the hospital. We need your help to keep us informed when someone is in the hospital, by calling the church office.

Benevolent Bus

"God comforts us every time we have trouble, so when others have trouble, we can comfort them with the same comfort God gives us."  II Corinthians 1:4

We, at St. Andrew's, wish to share the compassion of Jesus Christ with those needing temporary medical transportation asistance. Therefore, volunteers are ready to transport people to/from doctor visits, therapy, etc. within the Omaha Metro area.

Please contact Denise Johnson to volunteer to be a driver or if you have transportation needs.

Healing Meals

“…they broke bread…and ate their food with glad and generous hearts.”  Acts. 2:46

Teams of church members and friends assist families, who have experienced the death of a loved one, by serving meals following the funeral service. Through food and fellowship, family and friends are able to begin the healing process

Prayer Ministry

"Pray for each other."  James 5:16

We strive to help one another with their sorrows, illnesses, and concerns of all kinds, by praying for one another in times of need. Each week we receive prayer requests by phone, email, and Prayer Request Cards. These are immediately placed on our Prayer List. The most recent requests are placed in the bulletin each Sunday. When requested, our Prayer Chains are activated. You and your loved ones are lifted before God in intercession. Our BeFriender Prayer Team members continue to pray for you throughout the time you remain on the Prayer List

Befriender Ministries

"Spur one another on toward love and good deeds."  Hebrews 10:34

Lay persons, trained and supervised to be a listening presence for one-to-one care of those experiencing difficulties are known as BeFriender Ministers. They are also trained to provide pastoral care in hospitals, nursing homes, and to the homebound.

Breaking Bread

"Love one another."  Romans 12:10

Breaking Bread ministry provides meals for families or individuals in our congregation who are experiencing hardships or life changes such as a new baby, surgery, illness, or death in the family.  We have over 100 volunteer cooks who are periodically asked to prepare and deliver a meal to those in need.  The meal can also be purchased if you are short on time or don't enjoy cooking.

Our committee members and cooks will tell you that this is a very rewarding ministry!  We have the opportunity to offer fellowship, compassion, and general support from our St. Andrews family.  The information that follows explains in more detail how you can become involved.  Please consider joining us!

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO BECOME INVOLVED!

1.  Be a volunteer cook!  This ministry could not survive without its generous cooks.  If you are interested in cooking and delivering meals, you may do so as often or as little as desired.  Many commit to four or six times per year, and some prefer to cook once or twice during a year.

A meal consists of a main dish and a side dish.  Bread and dessert are optional.

If you are interested in cooking, please complete one of the yellow forms located in the basket on the information table.  You will soon receive a letter detailing guidelines and procedures for cooks.

2.  Join our team and serve as a Meal Coordinator!  If you have a desire to contribute to this ministry by becoming a member of our committee, we would love to have you!  Good communication and organizational skills are important, and also a willingness to coordinate meals by making phone calls to meal recipients and cooking volunteers.

The Breaking Bread ministry team meets once a month, but occasionally takes a month off.  Meal coordinators are responsible for setting up meals throughout one month during a year.

MEAL COORDINATOR
RESPONSIBILITIES and PROCEDURES
1.  During his/her assigned month, the Monthly Coordinator reviews the Prayer Concerns Booklet each week.  It can be found on the information table in the foyer of the church.  This resource helps make him/her aware of individuals or families in the congregation who may be experiencing a life change or hardship.  Charlotte Mallott, Minister of Pastoral Care, is available to clarify any prayer concerns and often informs us of individuals/families who might benefit from our ministry.

2.  The Monthly Coordinator contacts potential meal recipients to assess needs and offer meal support.  Information is obtained to assist in meal planning and delivery through a written checklist.   It includes details such as address/directions, food allergies, number of family members, likes and dislikes with regard to food, etc.

3.  Cooks are contacted to arrange the preparation/delivery of meals. The details checklist can be e-mailed to the cook or explained over the phone. Cooking/delivery dates are recorded on a set of spreadsheets in order to keep track of how often a cook is called upon.  Those volunteering for six times per year are only called every other month, those committed to cook four times are called only every third month, and so on.

4.  A phone log is used to record calls made to potential meal recipients and cooks.

5.  At the end of the month, the Coordinator for the current month meets with the Coordinator for the next month to provide a status of current needs and details about meals that have been scheduled.
