No Regrets: What Death Teaches Us About How to Live

In the Gospel according to Luke, Jesus willingly turns toward his death when he “sets his face toward Jerusalem.” He is resolute and clear-eyed, embracing the end of his mortal life in pursuit of life that cannot be taken from him. The reality of our own deaths invites us to turn our faces toward the inevitable in the same way, not only with acceptance but with fierce urgency. As poet Mary Oliver asks, “What will you do with your one wild and precious life?”
This Lent, we will journey toward the cross with Jesus, guided by Luke’s Gospel and inspired by death doula Alua Arthur’s book Briefly, Perfectly Human, as we open our hearts to receive the fearless love of God in which we live now and beyond death.
